Picked up two of 1" stainless shafts totaling about 3' from the recycle place (only useful thing they have had for machining over there to date). Wish they would get some aluminum of some ilk other than used beer and pop cans :-).
Evened it up by turning it down just a touch, it was pretty round to begin with. I suspect they were drive shafts for something. Using the cutoff tool was a fairly tough job, I ended up grinding somwhat of an angle on the cutoff too, which seemed to help and kept a drip of mineral oil going on it. Took a while, but I got both ends cut off nicely.
I *really* do need a carrage lock.
Finished it up with 220 grit sandpaper then went over it with 600, took a while and is not quite a complete mirror finish, but it does look good!
Big job on the lathe, but it turned out well. Stainless is indeed TOUGH stuff :-).
